Baltimore Colts History - Origins

The original incarnation of the Baltimore Colts began in the All-America Football Conference in 1946 as the Miami Seahawks. After a 3-11 season, the team was purchased by local Baltimore ownership and moved to Baltimore for the 1947 season, taking the name Colts in 1947 from a "name the team" contest. The team's colors were green and gray, and games were played at Memorial Stadium on 33rd Street in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1950, they joined the National Football League along with the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. They were a surprise addition to the league, being considerably weaker financially than several of the AAFC teams left out of the merger. They played only one season in the NFL, with a record of 1-11. Y. A. Tittle was the old Colts starting quarterback.

Due to financial difficulties after the 1-11 losing season, Colts owner Abraham Watner gave his team and its players contracts back to the NFL for $50,000. But many Baltimore fans protested the loss of their team. Supporting groups such as its marching band (the second in professional football, after that of the Washington Redskins) and fan club, remained in operation and worked for the team's revival. Three years later a new team was given to Baltimore.

How did Baltimore get the name "Colts"?

The name "Colts" came from a fan contest, and reflected the great tradition and proud history of horse breeding and racing in the Baltimore region. The original Colts disbanded after the 1950 season but the name was retained when a new Baltimore franchise began play in 1953.

Read more about it here, as well as the nickname origins of the other NFL teams!

Memorial Stadium Plane Crash

PhotobucketOn December 19, 1976, just minutes after the conclusion of an NFL playoff game with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a small plane buzzed the stadium, and then crashed into the upper rows of the upper tier of seating. Fortunately for the fans, the Steelers had won the game handily (40-14), and most of the fans had already exited the stadium by the time the game ended. There were no serious injuries, and the pilot was arrested for violating plane safety regulations.

The "Sack Pack"

Anyone remember the "Sack Pack" from the mid-70's? Can you name more than one player? Here they are: Defensive ends Fred Cook and John Dutton, and defensive tackles Mike Barnes and Joe Ehrmann made up the Sack Pack.

1976 Divisional Playoff Game vs. Steelers

I only attended a couple of Colts games. My first was the 1976 Divisional Playoff game against the Steelers. I believe a co-worker of my father had a couple of extra tickets, very close to mid-field, as I recall. It was a cold, overcast day, but I remember the thrill of walking up the ramp and seeing the field in person for the first time. I remember clearly the 3rd play of the game, when Terry Bradshaw through a 76 yard TD pass to John Stallworth. That's the only play I remember. The Colts lost 40-14.
